DIY USB Flash DrivesRecently Premium USB posted our 10 favorite USB flash drives that we have seen floating around on the internet and it got us thinking. What ordinary objects are Do-It-Yourself flash drive owner’s altering their flash drives into? We know that not every flash drive user has ever had the bug to create their own unique drive, but here are some ideas for our DIY users who want to turn a standard flash drive into a custom one.

Note: To make a custom flash drive, you first must remove the actual flash drive from its protective outer casing so that it can be inserted into another object.

Chap stick; almost every has used it and everyone has seen someone use it. Regardless of your favorite brand, the Chap Stick casing makes a great protective casing for a flash drive. Simply remove the Chap Stick itself, clean the inside of the casing the best you can, and insert the flash drive. Some modification to the casing or the circuit board (minor sanding) may be required.

Note: Make sure to glue the board in place using a strong adherent to prevent the drive from slipping out.

Old technology can prove to be a useful storage for a flash drive and gives your new technology a retro look. Floppy drives can prove to be a useful storage for the circuit board; after all, it was designed to protect the data on a floppy drive. Modifying a floppy drive will be a little more complex than the Chap Stick, but with some minor modification to the floppy disc and some glue, you can make a floppy disc flash drive.

Toys provide an excellent source for custom flash drive casings if you have the knowledge and knowhow to modify them. You could take apart that old Rubik’s cube that is collecting shelf dust and modify it comfortably house a USB drive. Or you could grab an old toy car and hollow out enough space inside to protect a USB circuit board. There are literally thousands of toy choices and with a little equipment; you can create your very own custom toy USB

Candy dispensers such as a PEZ dispenser makes a great casing as well. With some glue, perhaps a small drill, and some creativity you can modify a candy dispenser to instead dispense candy, but to dispense your USB drive.

Want something a little more conventional? Why not try putting a USB drive in office supplies. Large erasers, paperclip holder, even some highlighter markers will all work wonderfully as housing for a USB. Simply remove the contents within these devices, and just like the other ideas on this list, secure the flash drive chip to ensure that the drive will not move around.

Hopefully one if not many of these ideas sparked your imagination as to what ordinary everyday objects can be turned into USB drives. Of course if you attempt to make your own custom flash drive, make sure to take proper safety precautions.
