2010: The Year of USB 3.0?

2010: The Year of USB 3.0?2010 kicked off with a bang at the Consumer Electronics Show a few weeks ago. Hundreds of new products and new technologies were on display and ready to be played with. One could say we were as happy as a kid in a candy store to get our hands on these new devices; in particular, USB 3.0 devices!

First it should be noted to our readers that back in 2009, CES did not have much information about USB 3.0 other than the fact that it was “coming soon”. 3.0 specs weren’t officially released yet and the first production USB 3.0 device would be months away. Lucky for us the first known USB 3.0 devices started going into production this last December with big companies like ASUS and Gigabyte leading the charge.

Little over a month later at CES, and the beginning of 2010, it was hard not to constantly run into products or gadgets with USB 3.0 technology. Asus and Gigabyte, as well as many more, did not disappoint; showcasing a magnitude of devices all compatible with USB 3.0. Motherboards, PCI cards, and USB 3.0 hubs were highlights.

Even USB 3.0 flash drives and external backup drives were on display at this year’s CES show. Now these two pieces of technology will probably prove to be the most vital and most useful, and Premium USB couldn’t be more excited! 3.0 is lightning quick, more power efficient, backwards compatible, and is bidirectional. Couple all these advantages together and you not only get a quick device, but you also cut down on the time it takes to set up promotional projects. Instead of taking upwards of 15-30 minutes to upload your promotional videos, it could take as little as under a minute. This is a huge advantage.

Despite the fact that Intel, Apple, and Microsoft have not backed USB 3.0 yet may cause some concern, but the popularity of the USB and USB related gadgets ensures that USB 3.0 won’t be going anywhere any time soon. It also doesn’t hurt that USB 3.0 is the fastest mode of transfer for external devices to date. Coupled with USB 3.0’s lightning fast speed and backwards compatibility, it is safe to say that USB 3.0 should take off possibly even faster than USB 2.0 did.

It could very well be said that 2010 had a tremendous start and could end up becoming the year of USB 3.0. Premium USB would like to know what you think. Do you think USB 3.0 will have a big impact in 2010?
