Movies on USB Flash Drive!
With the USB flash drive becoming increasingly popular these days, more and more industries are utilizing the USB advantages. Recently Hollywood and movie production companies have joined the bandwagon and started selling movies on USBs. Big named companies such as Sony and Disney have already released several movies on USB drives and all seem to be selling pretty successfully. Big box office hits such as Men in Black, Ghostbusters, The Godfather, and The Da Vinci Code are among the select few titles that are now being sold on custom USB drives.
Here at Premium USB it is not surprising to learn that movies are now being sold on custom flash drives. Being in the USB business, we have known of the advantages for a long time, but it really is nice to see that flash drives are going mainstream and so many people are enjoying the USB’s versatility. It is because of the USB drive’s versatility that we believe USB flash drives are superior to conventional media such as DVDs. One advantage of a USB drive over conventional media is data protection. A DVD can get scratched, smudged, or smeared that can prevent or even destroy the data contained on the disc. In this case, the movie can be become unreadable. USB drives however have a protective case around the memory where the movies data is stored, ensuring the data’s protection.
USB drives are also much easier to transport than conventional media. With DVDs, you not only have to carry the disc itself, but any packaging that goes along with it. With USB drives all the information is contained and protected inside the drive itself, which eliminates bulky packaging. Movies on custom USB drives are also more convenient for transportation thanks to advances in technology. Advances such as decreasing the physical size of USBs, increasing the capacity of USBs, and the widespread integration of the USB port have all made it easier and more user friendly to carry USB flash drives. With the increasing USB capacity, it is now possible to even store more than one movie on a single USB drive. Just try to get more than one movie on a DVD…
Lastly, promotional USB drives provide much more customization than conventional discs. With DVDs you can only customize the packaging and the disc-printing surface, but with custom flash drives, you can customize the whole thing. For example, the new Star Trek movie will be released on conventional media as well as collectors edition USB drives. What makes this USB drive so unique is that the drive itself has been customized into the classic Star Trek emblem. How awesome is that?
Of course there are some technical requirements however. Just like a normal DVD, you need supporting hardware and software to run the movie. USB drives require a host computer, TV or portable device that has an available USB port as well as supporting software that will recognize/play it. At this time, there seems to be no unifying USB movie format standard, but we believe there will be very soon. Who knows though, you may soon see a kiosk where you can load movies on flash memory cards outside your local convenience store.
Overall, the movie industry and production companies are starting to see the benefits of using USB drives over conventional media. USBs are more versatile, hold more information, last longer, and provide much more customization options than their media counterparts. At Premium USB we look forward to watching custom and promotional USB drives grow into the industry standard.

I would totally buy a movie on a USB drive! Promotional videos like Quick Time or Windows Media Player files are great to preload on corporate marketing custom USB drives too. Premium USB data services like our Auto Launch we can put promotional videos into a menu with other buttons to other promotional materials too for a great well rounded presentation on a flash drive.
I wonder – how does the video and audio quality of a film on a USB compare to a DVD? A single layer DVD is only 4.7GB, well within the capability of moderate capacity USB drives, so I guess a large enough USB drive could achieve the same quality.
