Bigger USB Flash Drives are always Better
The old adage goes, bigger is always better. Well this may not be the case in some scenarios like a bigger medical bill, but when it comes to promotional flash drives, bigger really is better.
At Premium USB, we receive orders all the time for 1gb custom flash drives for the purpose of giving away at trade shows or company events. The USB drives are always well received and provide a unique way to attract new customers. But there is always one thing that seems to escape through the loophole of marketing; giving customers something that they will actually use for a long time. In the case of promotional USB drives, companies often stuff their drives with so much information that it leaves little to no room for customers information.
Now why is this a problem? This is a problem because the object of custom USBs is to attract more customers to your business or your service. In order to attract the most customers for your money spent, you have to create three aspects for long-term, repeated, exposure. The first aspect is that the custom USB has to be visually attractive. The second is that drive must contain promotional material so they can remember where they got the USB drive. And the last aspect to creating a custom USB with lasting appeal is that it has to be functional to the customer. By stuffing the USB drive with all your information, your campaign, promotional movies, and etc. customers see the value in your company or service, but don’t see the functionality. How can a USB drive crammed with information be of benefit to them?
Well there are a couple answers that can help you get more functionality out of your promotional USB drives. First you could cut down on the information you put on the drives, which helps functionality but lowers the amount of marketing tools you can use to attract more customers. The second option and easily the best of both worlds option, is simply to upgrade the USBs to more capacity. Ok before you freak out, yes upgrading to a higher capacity USB drive does cost more, but by upgrading you fulfill your marketing campaigns as well as provide customers a reason to hold onto your USB drive much longer.
Here is a good example of how upgrading your USB drive can help. Lets say you originally used a 1GB custom USB to hold your promotional material. The customer receives the drive, plugs it into their computer and gets exposed to your promotional material. But since there is no available room left on the USB drive, the drive either gets tossed out or becomes a paperweight. Not really the best scenario if you want to attract customers. However, if you upgraded to a 2GB USB drive, 4GB USB drive, 8GB, or even a 16GB flash drive, then you have loads of extra space. Now the customer notices there is actually room to put their own information on the drive, and begins to use the USB drive on a daily basis. With all aspects fulfilled, you have created a promotional USB that will have repeated exposure for years to come.
Now you can still stick with the lower capacity promotional flash drives, handing them out at trade shows or giving them away at a industry event, but without giving the customer a reason to hang onto your drive, you could be wasting your money. By giving the customer room on the flash drive, you are in fact encouraging them to keep the USB drive longer than if the custom drive was full. Overall higher capacity drives do cost more, but as Premium USB and our customers have noticed, the returns are priceless.

Interesting, we have clients all the time who just order drive capacities based off the size of their data preload, but then you are not leaving the user much space unless they delete your materials. Bigger is always better and technology is always growing! It makes me ponder how amazing technology is and how much has changed. I remember using 100 MB zip drives in college…sadly that was the best form for removable portable storage then. Now I wouldn’t be caught without at least a 4 GB USB drive with me always. I guess it’s like radio was before television compared to the amazing HD TV’s in most homes today… can’t imagine life without the technology.
In the last couple years, I could not have dreamed of filling up 1gig of information on a thumb drive, but now i have a 4gig drive and i am even thinking of buying a 8gig or 16gig because even my 4gig is becoming easy to fill up. I also find flash drives the easiest way to backup important information and the more available information space I have, the more valuable the USB drive becomes to me.
